Drawing Pen and Ink

In Rome I had to reduce my technical means to drawing-pen and ink. I had no real studio, no space for canvasses, no connections to galleries. I scribbled some lines into my sketch-pads walking round in town. At home I elaborated with water colors or Chinese ink. From Berlin and the time of my etchings I was well trained to catch a picture quickly, precisely, in some lines. I could draw in a driving car, an autobus or train. It took some minutes to note down the main idea, the composition. The rest I memorized. It came back to me when I made water-colors later or little paintings in oil. These drawings have the firmness of my Berlin compositions and also a new softness and nonchalance inspired by the South.
